Hi all! I was quite honored to contribute a track to Ocean Child, a compilation of Yoko Ono covers, and it is out today. Today also happens to be Ms. Ono’s 89th birthday!
In late 2019, sweetheart of a guy Ben Gibbard wrote and asked me if I’d be interested in participating and a few short years later here we are!
Here is the original track:
and here is my cover:
Ms. Ono’s lyrics resonated quite deeply with me, and I wanted my musical arrangement, performance and production to convey the emotional maelstrom that her song conjured in me. I used an MS-20 synth for the dark and seething breath-like sounds, and I sang the backing vocals through a Voicelive to achieve those very high and very low and hopefully mildly disturbing harmonies. You might recognize the piano swells and flourishes from my piano practice posts, I’ve been trying to incorporate more piano in my work.
The entire album (with a ton of great artists) is available on all streaming platforms and at oceanchildtribute.com
Sending my best and hope you all have a great weekend.
