This made me realize that I haven't read a good bio of a musician or artist recently. Some of my favs include Our Band Could Be Your Life, Chronicles: Volume One by Bob Dylan, Trouble Boys (The Replacements), Hunger Makes Me a Made Girl (Carrie Brownstein), Girl in a Band (Kim Gordon), and Beastie Boys Book.
Do not recommend: Life by Keith Richards, Acid For The Children by Flea.
The Women in Me by Brittney Spears was surprisingly moving. I wasn't aware of her story or the terrible people in her life. I'm glad she is finally free of them.
Next on my reading list is Rebel Girl by Kathleen Hanna.
Thanks for the reminder to check Dilla Time out from the library. I just finished reading Neneh Cherry's memoir (A Thousand Threads) and my jaw was on the floor for a lot of it. Moreso because of the milieu that she came up in, less so in terms of creative process to be fair. But I'm always trying to channel a bit more wildness in the way that I work, and I definitely got some of that from her story.
Read " The Snow Goose " by Paul Gallico .. Way back in 70s after going to see Andy Larimer & his band Camel @ the Whiskey a go go on sunset Blvd . he announced his up coming Album will be titled " the Snow Goose " we were Blown-away by his playing this . so I found the book in the Library & read it & was, very touched in my early life . & of Course listened to Camel playing it always. i .found the book again later and, read it once, more . Just Beautiful . also Andy reworked His musical piece again and toured in Europe . wish I could have, been there .
also ..
Finished Blue Note Records the biography by Richard Cook .. was lots of fun because as I read the book was able to play my own blue note record .ex Grant Greens " Idle Moments " spinning as I read about it in this Book . Or I would find other blue, note, records I did not have on you tube or my Apple music . I was very inspired by reading the Liner Notes of History of Commodore Records , the early recordings of those Jazz albums in N Y city . from a little Store across the street from The Commodore Hotel . from my Mosaic Boxed set Commodore records,Vol 1 & 2 .
One other was of Reading " Miles " by Miles Davis & Quincy Troupe .. was Amazing .. I actually met Miles . he was so nice .. so was really something .
My next book . I have is Sinead O'Connor " Rememberings " just holding it Touched me ... so ill get back to you later .. Take Care Thao
Everything that I can get my hands on about David Bowie. Books, interviews, etc. I think what he represents to me is an encouragement to be myself and not feel so pressured to conform to the world around you, yet to still be highly inspired by it. And then he’s there making music until the very end, like really innovative new music that is deeply vulnerable, maybe his most personal work ever, yet fully of mystery and wonder.
Someone else whose creative process deeply inspires me is Alessandro Cortini. In interviews he talks a lot about approaching a single synth and seeing what it has to say to him. Deeply exploring it like a child would, in a playful way. Then taking this music and publishing it and not feeling a need to perfect it.
I guess a common theme is that I am a tyrant to myself, care a lot about others’ perception, and I need famous musicians to give me permission to be more myself. Shit.
It’s been awhile, but Just Kids by Patti Smith (the big hard cover with the photos), Girl in a Band by Kim Gordon, and The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer
Oh, and I see you asked what we are reading. Sorry. I listed my current music loves in my previous reply. I am reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed because she's coming to speak in my city and I want to know her work before I see her. It's a really good book, don't know how I didn't read it before now.
Reading this felt like being a kid and getting a really awesome letter in the mail from someone just because…. nemahsis and Amythsyt Kiah have been in loop for me lately. Time to tidy my studio 💜✨⚙️🪄

Thanks, Thao. I appreciate your writing and your music whenever it comes.
Loved you at Newport last summer, 10 years after your 2014 appearance. See? Some things are just worth waiting for. : )
